Chapter 14
Dylan watched Adrienne flee and as much as she wanted to be confused as to the reason, she knew better. She had sensed the moment Adrienne’s heart sang to hers and felt her own transcend the boundaries of her earthly body and entwine eternally with Adrienne’s. She didn’t know what it felt like the moment a person’s soul left their body and sought it’s rightful place in heaven, but she imagined it felt much like the joining of their two souls. Unlike Adrienne, who had feared this moment, she welcomed it. She ushered it in and accepted this newfound feeling, as it now coursed through her veins with unmatched energy.
There was no fear, only hope, the dream that Adrienne would follow her heart. She ran her fingers through her hair distractedly. With the acceptance of love comes the burden of doubt and until Adrienne gave wings to her love, Dylan would be forced to wonder if her love would go unrequited. She didn’t question Adrienne being in love with her, she only questioned her ability to let herself love. She would wait forever if that was how long it took Adrienne to decide. Adrienne was her future and the love between them was her lifeblood.
Dylan heard the door creak and she looked up expectedly, her eyes meeting Adrienne’s. She’d managed to mask her feelings in her brief respite outside. “I’m sorry. It’s a little stuffy in here. I needed some air.”
Dylan understood her need to cover her feelings, to protect herself and she felt a deeper connection to Adrienne. “It’s fine. It is a little warm. I can put the fire out if you want.”
“No, it’s fine.” Adrienne said as she shook her head. “It’s much chillier outside now and the fire will help keep it warm.” She took a quick drink of water from the bottle Dylan had set on the table and climbed back on the bed. She still didn’t lay down though, merely sat against the headboard and tucked her legs underneath her. She watched Dylan for several seconds before she spoke again. “Thank you for telling me about your childhood and about the…your accident.”
Dylan rolled onto her side and rested her head on her hand. “I’m glad I could tell you. It means a lot that it was you.” Her eyes locked on Adrienne’s and she held her there, pulling her deeper into her soul, memorizing every feature, every line of her face. Adrienne was inside her now, in every part of her body and she felt alive. It did matter that she could finally talk about her past and only Adrienne had been able to reach in and open her soul and learn her deepest secrets.
Adrienne smiled widely. She knew how hard it must have been to share this part of herself and she loved Dylan for it. That much she could no longer deny. Her heart was beyond her control, but her body she would still command. She broke the invisible force between them and willed her heart to stop beating out of her chest.
